Show Time For Senior Prom

It was night of One-Acts. Senior Prom was second in the line up of five one-act plays. With so many stories being told, I was curious to how Senior Prom would stand out among the crowd. Well, it helps when your show is written by the amazing Dr. Janice Lindell, who's work has been chosen three times for Page to Stage. I had the honor of directing Dr. Lindell's Play Ptomaine Poison last year. So, I am not only familiar with her work but I am also fan of how she beautifully brings the voice of the black community to the stage.

Senior Prom has a wonderful twist to the title! Senior Prom meaning a prom for senior citizens. Sitting in the theatre, I could tell the audience was delighted once they caught wind of this play on words. During the rehearsal process, our focus was on "family". We wanted to bring an authentic family dynamic to the stage. Again, I lucked out with such a fabulous cast. As soon as we got in the rehearsal room this cast gelled and the chemistry was off the charts. So, we have an amazing script, and awesome twist, and lovable cast. Now, we just need that "cherry on top" baby! Something that is going to make us stand out! It was now time for me to work my magic.

Senior Prom has some moments where time passes. I need to find a creative way to show time passing. So, I decided to recreate a Prom on stage. With each passage of time the prom builds. So, we start with a good catchy song. In this case, we used "Nitty Gritty" by Shirley Ellis. It's a bop! Then, we add disco ball white lights. Then, we add colored lights. Finally, we make all the lights move, change, and swirl as we enter full prom mode. To see this Prom magically come to life on stage was unforgettable!

This cast was a joy to work with. Their warmth on stage exuded into the audience bring smiles to everyone's face. Senior Prom was with out a doubt a the hit of the night. I am so proud to have brought this work to life and that's another show in the books.
